"What is a cinémathèque?
The word “cinémathèque” is a recent addition to the French language. A brief explanation is therefore in order. A cinémathèque or film library is to cinema what a library is to literature or what a fine arts museum is to painting or sculpture.
In the interests of history and art, a cinémathèque aims to establish the museum of the seventh art. It groups together and preserves all cinematographic documents, including films, photos, books, texts, press cuttings, equipment and accessories, and saves them from systematic destruction or neglect. Its research and cataloguing aim to establish the history of cinematography, the rational and scientific study of its various aspects (aesthetic, economic, sociological), and the definition and dissemination of the specific culture that results from it. This is why a cinémathèque makes its documents available to private bodies or schools to be used for educational purposes.
Official, semi-official and private cinémathèques exist in most countries of the world."
