"1948–1998: a snapshot in time
Fifty years. A moment to pause. A moment to pose. A snapshot that will be obsolete tomorrow. The Cinémathèque suisse is not a dusty archival storeroom nor a private club where rarities are screened for a select few. A public screening venue, library, photo library, conservation centre and a living museum all rolled into one, the 50-year-old Cinémathèque is the only institution of its kind in Switzerland. Its impressive collection is placed sixth in the world rankings according to a statistic from 1995 established by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), of which the Cinémathèque has been a member since 1948. Surpassed by Washington, Brussels, Bois d’Arcy, London and Moscow, but well ahead of Rome or Tokyo, for example."
